Vine Weevil and Soil Pests: The Hidden Threat Below the Surface
Most bonsai pests make themselves known through visible damage to foliage or stems. Soil pests are more insidious because the damage they cause happens underground, out of sight, and the symptoms above ground can look identical to those caused by overwatering, underwatering, or root disease. By the time the tree shows serious distress, significant root damage may already have occurred.
Vine Weevil: The Most Damaging Soil Pest
The vine weevil is the most destructive soil pest that bonsai growers in the UK and Europe are likely to encounter. The adult beetle, a dull grey-brown insect about one centimetre long, is nocturnal and feeds on leaf edges, leaving distinctive irregular notches that are worth knowing. The adults are a nuisance but cause relatively minor damage. The larvae are the real problem.
Adult females lay eggs in the soil from mid-summer onward. The eggs hatch into creamy white, C-shaped grubs that feed voraciously on roots through autumn and winter. By spring, when damage becomes visible above ground through wilting and sudden decline, the root system may have been extensively destroyed.
Identifying a Vine Weevil Infestation
The most reliable way to confirm vine weevil grubs is to remove the tree from its pot and inspect the root zone directly. The grubs are unmistakable: fat, legless, C-shaped, cream coloured with a brown head, and typically between five and twelve millimetres in length depending on their stage of development.
If you find grubs, remove them by hand and dispose of them. Assess the remaining root system, trim back any dead or badly damaged roots, and repot into fresh soil before applying biological control.
Treating Vine Weevil
Biological Control
Nematodes, specifically Steinernema kraussei, are microscopic worms that parasitise vine weevil larvae in the soil. Applied as a soil drench in late summer or early autumn while soil temperatures are still warm enough, they are highly effective and completely safe for plants, people, and wildlife. This is the preferred treatment for most bonsai growers and is available from specialist suppliers and many garden centres.
Chemical Treatment
Systemic insecticides containing imidacloprid are effective against vine weevil larvae and can be applied as a soil drench. They are absorbed through the roots and make the plant tissue toxic to feeding insects. They should be used only when necessary and according to the product instructions.
Other Soil Pests to Watch For
Fungus Gnat Larvae
Fungus gnat larvae live in moist soil and feed on fine roots and organic matter. They are most problematic in consistently wet conditions. Allowing the soil to dry slightly between waterings reduces their numbers significantly. Yellow sticky traps placed near the tree catch the adults and help monitor population levels.
Root Aphids
Less common but occasionally encountered, root aphids feed on roots and can cause decline similar to vine weevil damage. Inspection during repotting reveals their presence. A systemic insecticide or a soil drench with an appropriate insecticidal treatment is effective.
Finally
Checking the soil and roots during annual or biennial repotting is your best defence against soil pests. What you find during repotting often tells you more about what has been happening to your tree than any amount of above-ground observation.
